Biking in Berlin

So just to backtrack real quick to Berlin...on Saturday (the day we arrived) Yvonne had also taken us to the East Side Gallery where artists had painted murals on pieces of the Berlin Wall. It was really interesting to see each person's interpretation of the wall.

Onto Sunday...we went to Mauerpark, which used to be in East Berlin. Basically it was a huge flea market and then a party out on this field with various people chilling, drinking or grilling. There were some acts going on as well...comedic or musical. We really enjoyed the drummers...and a couple of the dancers to them (a video will follow in a later post).

A friend of Yvonne's met up with us and took us to a Mexican restaurant in the area. This is really the first time I have seen such a restaurant in Europe and the food was fairly decent (though fans of spicy food would find it lacking).

On Monday Liza and I went to the Brandenburger Tor and the Holocaust Memorial and got to go up to the dome of the Reichstag. Afterwards we rented some bikes and rode around the Tiergarten, back along the banks of the Spree (with a stop at a Biergarten for some wurst and bier), to Alexanderplatz and came back to the Stadtmitte to return the bikes and meet up with Cleo.

Cleo and Yvonne were at Yvonne's apartment so that she could finish up packing and other odds and ends and Cleo could finish up a research proposal she has to send to Costa Rica. Cleo then was able to come with us to go to the Botanisher Garten. We really just went to these greenhouses which had several rooms of all types of plants of various climates. Cleo being the botany nerd of us did enjoy it and thought the germans had done a good job. (This place was also the home to one of those large plants from Indonesia that blooms rarely and smells like rotting flesh when it does so.)

Tuesday morning we all leave to go to Croatia! So the next post will be about that experience...but I can say right now that the weather I lovely and I am sunburnt a little.
